Wainfleet All Saints is a small market town sitting quietly between the Lincolnshire Wolds and the coast, and for anyone travelling with a dog, that position is more useful than it might first appear. You’re within easy reach of open farmland, the Steeping River, and one of the best nature reserves on the east coast — all without the noise and footfall of a seaside resort. The walks here are the unhurried kind, and most dogs take to them immediately.
The Steeping River path
The most accessible walk from Wainfleet itself. The Steeping River runs through the town and the path along its banks is flat, quiet, and easy underfoot — good for dogs who prefer a steady pace, and good for owners who want to think rather than navigate. You can pick it up from the town centre and follow it for as long as you like in either direction. No stiles, no complications. It’s the kind of walk you do twice in a stay because it asks nothing of you.
Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve
The standout option, and worth planning your trip around. Gibraltar Point is a national nature reserve about six miles from Wainfleet, sitting at the southern end of Skegness beach where the sand gives way to dunes, saltmarsh, and open sky. It’s a proper walk, you can easily spend two to three hours here and the scale of it means your dog can move freely without constantly being redirected. There’s a visitor centre with toilets and basic facilities, and parking on site.
Dogs are welcome at Gibraltar Point, but during nesting season (roughly April to July) there are seasonal restrictions on certain sections of the reserve to protect ground-nesting birds. It’s worth checking the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust website before you go, particularly in spring. Outside those months, it’s as open as it looks.
Wainfleet to Friskney, the fields route
A quieter option that follows public footpaths across farmland east of Wainfleet towards the village of Friskney. It’s the kind of walk that doesn’t appear on many lists, which is part of the point. Long grass, big skies, and very few other people. Keep dogs on leads when crossing working farmland, particularly where there’s livestock. The route is a few miles each way and can be done as a there-and-back or a loop depending on how far you want to go.
Skegness seafront (out of season)
During the summer, dogs are restricted to certain sections of Skegness beach (standard for most busy seaside resorts in the UK). Outside the summer season, however, dogs are welcome on most of the beach, and a winter or early spring walk along the Skegness seafront is a different proposition entirely. Quieter, windier, and considerably more your dog’s idea of a good time than yours. Worth including on a longer Lincolnshire coast trip if the timing is right.
A few practical notes
Most of the walks around Wainfleet cross or border farmland at some point. Keep dogs on leads near livestock without exception. This applies year-round, not just during lambing season. The area is flat and low-lying, so paths can be boggy after rain; a pair of waterproof boots is worth packing regardless of the forecast. The nearest vet to Wainfleet is in Skegness, a short drive if you need one.
